Celebrating National Pollinator Week at Creekside Farms: Our Lavender Harvest and the Importance of Pollinators
At Creekside Farms, we are dedicated to celebrating and supporting the vital role that pollinators play in our ecosystem. This year, National Pollinator Week takes place from June 17-23, 2024. We will be celebrating all week long with our very own lavender harvest and bringing in two new hives to the ranch. Our vibrant lavender fields are not only a sight to behold, but also a haven for our beloved pollinators, especially bees. We are excited to have two new hives come in and of course, we will also enjoy the lavender honey made from our own plants.
The Significance of National Pollinator Week
National Pollinator Week is an annual event that highlights the importance of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, bats, and birds. These creatures are crucial for the health of our ecosystems as they facilitate the pollination of plants, which in turn produces the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we rely on. This week serves as a reminder of the essential work these pollinators do and the need to protect and preserve their habitats.
Our Lavender Harvest
Our lavender fields are in full bloom, and the air is filled with the soothing, aromatic scent of fresh lavender. Harvesting this beautiful herb is a labor of love for us at Creekside Farms. Lavender is not only a key ingredient in many of our products but also a significant attractant for bees. These industrious pollinators are drawn to the vibrant purple flowers, where they find an abundant source of nectar and pollen.
Keeping Our Bees Happy
While we harvest our lavender to create our range of products, we are committed to ensuring that we leave enough plants around our fields to keep our bees happy and thriving. Pollinators are essential to our farm's success and the broader environment, and we take our responsibility to support them seriously.
Bees, in particular, play a critical role in pollinating many of the plants that produce the food we eat. By providing them with a healthy, pesticide-free environment filled with blooming lavender, we help sustain their populations and ensure that they can continue their vital work.
How You Can Help
Supporting pollinators is something that everyone can do, no matter where you live. Here are a few simple steps you can take to make a difference:
- Plant Native Flowers: Choose a variety of native plants that bloom at different times of the year to provide a continuous source of nectar and pollen.
- Reduce Pesticide Use: Avoid using pesticides in your garden, as they can harm pollinators. Opt for natural pest control methods instead.
- Create Habitats: Provide shelter for pollinators by leaving areas of your garden wild, installing bee houses, or creating butterfly gardens.
- Support Local Farms: Purchase products from local farms that practice sustainable and pollinator-friendly methods.
